A poem I wrote a while back…
Retreated
With sisters today
Sisters and children
Eager for the sunshine
Ready for the poolside
All out together
Before Ramadhan
A day full of laughter
And movement
And fun
Was stilled for me
For a few precious moments
Moments after
The adhan was called.
Because I prayed on grass
Today
Green blades
Tickling
My points of prostration
My nose
Inhaling
The warm scent
Of earth
Breath…
Focus…
Hear the earth
Sigh a prayer
In the leaves of the trees
The sun
Warm on my back
Through my clothing
The soil
Shimmering
In the final tashahud
The wind
Caressing
My cheek
As i turn to salaam
Salaam
Yes, peace was mine today
In those moments of prostration
Of quiet concentration
Of inner reflection
Of joyful realisation
When did you last pray on grass?
Love it! I feel united with the rest of Allah SWT’s creation in the worship of Allah SWT: the birds, the grass, the wind … I always think of the verse in Surah Nur:
“See you not (O Muhammad SAW) that Allâh, He it is Whom glorify whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with wings out-spread (in their flight). Of each one He (Allâh) knows indeed his Salât (prayer) and his glorification, [or everyone knows his Salât (prayer) and his glorification], and Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. (An-Nur 24:41)
Aaah, that’s a lovely poem, masha’Allah
Last time I prayed on grass was the first time I went to back home (to South Africa)…my first time being back home as a Muslim. Was also a beautiful experience.
